Establishment of a General Aviation Area Case Study

The airfield was used extensively for rotary training flights.  A non-standard-shaped circuit had previously been in place due to the proximity of the CTA boundary of an adjacent busy airport.  The customer approached us with a desire to fly standard-shaped circuits.  A project was initiated to introduce a small fillet of airspace that would be temporarily allocated on a daily basis when requested to enable the helicopter traffic to fly a standard-shaped circuit. Following consultation with the regulator, it was determined that the most appropriate way to achieve this was through the use of a General Aviation Area (GAA) which could be temporarily allocated to the airfield. In addition, a deemed separation was introduced to allow traffic to operate in to the circuit irrespective of traffic on the final approach to the adjacent runway of the nearby international airport.
